The myth behind the constellation
In Greek myth, the great hunter Orion boasted that he could kill every animal on earth. In response, the earth goddess Gaia (in some versions Artemis) sent a giant scorpion, which stung and killed him. Both were placed in the sky — but on opposite sides, so that Orion sets in the west as Scorpius rises in the east. The hunter is still fleeing the scorpion.
Scorpius is one of the few constellations that genuinely looks like its name, with a curved tail that ends in a sting. Its heart is Antares, a vast red supergiant star whose name means "rival of Mars", for its red colour. A fitting heart for a sign ruled by Mars.
