The 8 moon phases
🌑 New Moon
The Moon sits between Earth and the Sun and its lit side faces away from us, so it is not visible. Traditionally a time for fresh starts, setting intentions and planting seeds for what comes next.
🌒 Waxing Crescent
A thin sliver of light appears in the evening sky. Traditionally a time to commit to your intentions, take the first practical steps and build early momentum.
🌓 First Quarter
Half the Moon is lit, on the right-hand side from the Northern Hemisphere. Traditionally a time of challenge and decision, when obstacles show up and action is needed.
🌔 Waxing Gibbous
More than half lit and growing towards full. Traditionally a time to refine, adjust and keep going as the work you started takes shape.
🌕 Full Moon
The whole face is lit and the Moon rises as the Sun sets. Traditionally a time of culmination, clarity and heightened emotion, when results become visible.
🌖 Waning Gibbous
The light begins to shrink from the right. Traditionally a time for gratitude, sharing what you have learned and passing knowledge on.
🌗 Last Quarter
Half lit again, now on the left side. Traditionally a time for release, forgiveness and clearing out what no longer serves you.
🌘 Waning Crescent
A fading sliver before dawn. Traditionally a quiet time to rest, reflect and recover before the next cycle begins.
Phase pictures show the Moon as seen from the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere the lit side appears reversed, but the phase and date are the same everywhere on Earth.

Frequently asked questions
What is the moon phase today?
The moon phase changes every day. This page works out today's phase, the percentage of the Moon that is lit and the zodiac sign the Moon is passing through, using your device's date and time.
How long is a full lunar cycle?
A full cycle from one new moon to the next takes about 29.5 days, which is called a synodic month. That is why full moons fall on a different date each month and the calendar above shifts by about a day each time.
What is a Moon sign transit?
Astrologers track which zodiac sign the Moon is in because it changes every two to three days and is said to colour the collective mood. A New Moon or Full Moon takes on the flavour of the sign it falls in.
Is the moon phase the same everywhere in the world?
Yes. The Moon has the same phase everywhere on Earth at the same moment. Only the direction it appears to be lit from differs: the pictures here show the Northern Hemisphere view.
How accurate are the dates on this page?
They are calculated from standard astronomical formulas and are normally within a few minutes of published almanacs. If you need exact timing for something important, such as an eclipse, check an astronomical source.
