Where this calendar comes from

The thirteen-tree calendar is a modern invention, not an ancient Celtic one. It was popularised by Robert Graves in The White Goddess (1948), who built it on the names of the Ogham letters. The Ogham alphabet and its letter names are genuinely old, but the idea of assigning a tree to each part of the year has no known ancient source. Treat it as a fun modern tradition, in the same spirit as a horoscope.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Celtic tree calendar really ancient?

No. The popular 13-month tree calendar comes from the poet and writer Robert Graves, who set it out in his 1948 book The White Goddess. It borrows the names of Ogham letters, but there is no evidence that the ancient Celts used a tree zodiac or a calendar like this.

What is my Celtic tree sign?

Enter your birth date in the calculator above. The popular version divides the year into thirteen periods of about four weeks, each named after a tree, plus one extra day, 23 December, that most versions leave without a tree.

Do all sources give the same dates?

No. Different books and websites shift the dates by a day or two, and some use a different set of trees. This page uses the most widely repeated version, so your result may differ slightly elsewhere.

What does Ogham have to do with it?

Ogham is the early Irish alphabet. Its letters have traditional names, many of which are also tree or plant names, and the modern tree calendar reuses thirteen of them. The link is a modern one: the letter names are old, but pairing them with dates of the year is not.

Is a Celtic tree sign the same as a zodiac sign?

No. Your zodiac sign comes from Western astrology, which is based on the position of the Sun against the constellations through the year. The tree sign is a separate, modern system. They can be enjoyed side by side, and you can read your daily horoscope on the home page.
