The myth behind the constellation
Libra is the only sign of the zodiac represented by an object rather than a living creature. Its scales are often linked to Astraea, the goddess of justice (see Virgo), or to Themis, the Greek personification of divine order and fairness, who is still pictured holding scales in courtrooms today.
Interestingly, the ancient Greeks originally saw Libra's stars as the claws of Scorpio, the scorpion next door. The two brightest stars still have Arabic names meaning "the southern claw" and "the northern claw". It was the Romans who firmly established the scales as their own constellation — a sign that learned to stand in balance on its own.
