The myth behind the constellation
The constellation Aquarius is often linked with Ganymede, a beautiful young Trojan prince. Zeus, taking the form of an eagle, carried him up to Mount Olympus to become cupbearer to the gods, pouring their drinks of nectar. He was later honoured with a place among the stars, where he still pours water from his jar.
Much older traditions in Babylon and Egypt also connected this part of the sky with water and floods, as the Sun passed through it during rainy seasons. A figure who serves everyone, pouring out what's needed — a good image for Aquarius at its best.
