Death is card thirteen of the Major Arcana, and probably the most misunderstood card in the deck. It almost never means physical death. Instead, it represents endings, transformation and the clearing away of the old so that something new can begin.
What's on the card
A skeleton in black armour rides a white horse, carrying a black flag decorated with a white five-petalled rose, a symbol of life and renewal. In front of the horse, a king lies fallen, while a bishop, a young woman and a child react in different ways — pleading, turning away, looking on with innocence. No one escapes change, whatever their status. In the background the sun rises between two towers, a clear sign that after the ending comes a new day.
Death Upright
Upright, Death signals that a chapter is closing. It may be a job, a relationship, a belief or a phase of life. Endings can be painful, but this card treats them as necessary and natural — the ground has to be cleared before anything new can grow.
It encourages you to let go rather than cling on. Transformation is under way, and accepting it will make the transition easier.
