The Hierophant
The Hierophant is card five of the Major Arcana. Also called The Pope in older decks, it represents tradition, shared beliefs, teachers and institutions — the knowledge and values passed down through religion, education, family and community.
What's on the card
A religious figure in red robes and a triple crown sits between two grey pillars, raising his right hand in blessing. In his left he holds a triple cross. Two crossed keys lie at his feet — the keys to knowledge, or to heaven and earth. Two followers kneel before him, wearing robes patterned with roses and lilies, receiving his teaching. The scene is formal and ordered: this is wisdom handed down through ritual and structure.
The Hierophant Upright
Upright, The Hierophant points to learning from established paths. It can suggest finding a mentor or teacher, joining a group, studying, or following tried-and-tested methods rather than reinventing everything yourself.
The card also covers shared values and ceremonies — weddings, graduations, religious or cultural traditions — and the comfort of belonging to something bigger than yourself.
The Hierophant Reversed
Reversed, The Hierophant often signals questioning convention. You may be outgrowing rules or beliefs that no longer fit, or challenging an institution that has stopped serving the people in it.
It can also point to rigid dogma, pressure to conform, or someone using tradition to control others. The reversal asks you to find your own path while keeping what is genuinely wise from the old one.

The Hierophant in Career & Work
At work, this card suits established organisations, teaching, training and roles within a clear hierarchy. It's a good time to learn from experienced colleagues or gain qualifications. Reversed, it may point to frustration with red tape, or a wish to break away and do things your own way.
The Hierophant and Money
With money, The Hierophant recommends conventional, well-proven approaches: banks, pensions, professional advice. Reversed, you may be tempted by unconventional options — look carefully before you leap.
