The Devil is card fifteen of the Major Arcana. It isn't about evil in a religious sense; it's about the things that hold us captive — habits, addictions, unhealthy relationships, materialism and fear — and the uncomfortable truth that we often have more freedom than we think.
What's on the card
A horned, goat-like figure with bat wings crouches on a dark pedestal, one hand raised and the other holding a downward-pointing torch. An inverted pentagram sits above his head. Chained to the pedestal stand a naked man and woman, now with small horns and tails — a dark mirror of the couple in The Lovers. Look closely and the chains around their necks are loose: they could lift them off and walk away. The trap is one they have accepted.
The Devil Upright
Upright, The Devil asks you to look honestly at what's controlling you. It might be a habit, a craving, a toxic relationship, debt, or a fear that keeps you stuck. Naming the chain is the first step to loosening it.
