Rising sign, Sun sign and Moon sign

The Sun sign is who you are at the core, the Moon sign is what you need emotionally, and the Rising sign is how you come across. Someone with a Leo Sun and Pisces Rising may look gentle and dreamy at first, and only later show the warmth and pride of a Leo. Read all three together for the fullest picture, and see how the Moon moves through each sign on the moon phase page.

Why birth time matters

The Rising sign changes about every two hours as the Earth turns, so an accurate birth time is the key. If you do not know yours, try your birth certificate or ask a parent, and treat any Rising sign from a guessed time with caution.

How your Rising sign is worked out

Your Rising sign comes from three things: the date, the exact time and the place you were born. The place matters because the horizon looks different from different parts of the world, so two people born at the same minute in Dublin and in Madrid can have different Ascendants.

Astrologers take the zodiac sign that was on the eastern horizon at that moment and call it your Ascendant. It also marks the start of your First House, and every other house in a chart is counted from it. That is why a wrong birth time can change more than your Rising sign: it can move planets into different houses as well.

How to read your Rising sign

Sun sign and Rising sign: some examples

SunRisingHow astrologers often describe the mix
LeoPiscesSoft first impression, warm and proud underneath
CapricornGeminiSerious ambition delivered with a light, chatty manner
ScorpioLibraIntense inside, charming and diplomatic on the surface
AriesCancerBold drive, but people first notice the caring side
VirgoSagittariusCareful and analytical, but comes across as open and easygoing

If your Sun and Rising sign are the same, astrologers usually say that sign shows up very clearly in you, because what people see and who you are line up.

Common mistakes when finding your Rising sign

  1. Using a rounded birth time. If you were born "around three" rather than at a recorded time, your Rising sign could be wrong if that time sits near a sign change.
  2. Mixing up time zones and daylight saving. Check whether your birth time was recorded in local time. Clock rules, including daylight saving and wartime time, have changed over the years in Ireland and the UK, so older births are worth double-checking.
  3. Using the wrong place. Use the town or city of birth, not where you grew up.
  4. Judging it from a single description. Read the page for your sign, then ask whether it fits how people first react to you.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Rising sign?

Your Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place you were born. It describes your outward manner, your first impression and how you approach new situations.

How do I find my Rising sign?

You need your date, place and time of birth. The free birth chart calculator on this site works out your Sun, Moon and Rising sign in seconds. The birth time matters most, because the Rising sign changes roughly every two hours.

What is the difference between Sun, Moon and Rising sign?

The Sun sign is your core identity, the Moon sign is your emotional inner world and the Rising sign is the mask or style you show to new people. Together they give a fuller picture than the Sun sign alone.

Why does the birth time matter so much?

The Earth turns once a day, so all twelve signs rise over the horizon in about 24 hours. That means each sign rises for about two hours, and a small difference in birth time can give a different Rising sign.

Does the Rising sign ever change?

No. It is fixed by your birth time and place. Your Sun sign and Rising sign can be the same or different, and when they match, astrologers say the sign is especially strong in you.

What if I don't know my birth time?

Without a birth time you cannot work out a reliable Rising sign. You can still read your Sun sign and, with a birth date, your Moon sign. Some astrologers use "rectification", which works backwards from major life events, but treat any result as an estimate.

Can two people born on the same day have different Rising signs?

Yes. Because the Rising sign changes roughly every two hours, two people born on the same day, even in the same town, can have different Ascendants if they were born at different times.

Is the Rising sign the same as the First House?

They are linked. The Rising sign is the sign on the cusp of the First House, which is the starting point for the rest of the chart.

Which sign matters more, Sun or Rising?

Astrologers disagree. A common view is that the Sun sign describes who you are and the Rising sign describes how you come across, so both are useful.
